Reiki is an ancient form of healing art that arrived
to the North America in the 30s, from Japan. In the last ten years it has spread
worldwide, and there are prognosis stating that within the next ten years, 80% of the
population in the Western world will be practicing Reiki as a means of self-help.
Reiki works with the
Life Force Energy called Ki in Japan,
Chi in China, Prana in India, and Baraka in Sufism. The name is a combination of two
Japanese words: Ki (Life Force Energy), and Rei (Spirit or Consciousness), so the meaning
of Reiki would be "Spiritually Guided Life Force Energy". The Reiki practitioner
is merely a channel through which Reiki flows, and he/she transmits this energy to the
recipient through the palm energy centers. Since Reiki has a consciousness, or
intelligence of its own, the benefits do not depend of the skills or knowledge of the
practitioner, although there are means to enhance the effects of the treatment.
Why is Reiki
enjoying such increasing attention?
- It is easily
learned by people from all walks of life, without
- It is totally safe and harmless, has no side effects and no
counter-indications. Therefore, it can be applied to babies, seniors, expecting mothers,
cancer patients, free from any concern.
- It offers the
practitioner the possibility to treat himself/herself, at any time and any place.
- It is gentle and pleasant, and deeply relaxing. Many skeptics
become Reiki enthusiasts after just one session!
You lie down on the treatment table, fully
clothed, while I gently place my hands on various positions on or above the
body. The Western approach is an overall treatment
following mainly the energy centers (charkas), while the Japanese techniques employ other
methods as well, borrowed from Acupressure and Qi-Qong. The least you
may experiences in a session is a sense
of deep relaxation and well-being.
According to your degree of sensitivity in perception, you may be aware
of body felt sensation such as a change in the
body temperature, tingling sensations, a flow of energy, and more.
Often, I combine Reiki
with body-mind techniques directed at breaking limiting patterns
or thought, emotion and physiological dysfunction.
